1. Large-Format Pavers
Large pavers in porcelain or concrete give a patio a clean, modern look. With fewer joints, the surface reads as one continuous floor, which suits contemporary homes and makes a small patio feel bigger.
What to know before choosing them: large pieces show every dip, so the base has to be flat and well compacted. They also need the right thickness for where they go. A slab that is fine for a patio may not be suitable for a driveway.
2. Light, Cool-Toned Natural Stone
Ivory, silver and sand-colored travertine and marble remain the most requested materials around pools. Light stone reflects heat, so it is more comfortable for bare feet in direct sun, and a tumbled or textured finish gives grip when wet.

3. Pavers With Turf Joints

What to know: lighting wires are easy to run during construction and awkward to add afterward, so decide early.

Match the house. Large-format porcelain suits a modern home. Tumbled stone suits Mediterranean architecture.
Think about heat. Dark colors look sharp on a sample board and get hot in full sun.
Put function first. Slip resistance near water and good drainage matter more than the pattern. A patio that holds water will not look good for long, whatever it is made of.
