What a proper retaining wall installation includes
A wall is only as good as what sits under it and behind it. Most of the work that decides whether a wall stays straight is hidden once the job is finished, so it helps to know what should be there. A proper retaining wall installation covers these steps:
- Excavation down to firm ground, with topsoil and roots removed from the footprint.
- A compacted gravel base that is level along the full length of the wall.
- A buried first course, so the bottom of the wall is held in place by the ground in front of it.
- Each course checked for level and stepped back slightly into the slope.
- Clean gravel backfill and a drain pipe behind the wall, with an outlet so the water has somewhere to go.
- Reinforcement for taller walls, usually a grid fabric layered into the backfill as the wall goes up.
- Backfill compacted in layers as the wall rises, not dumped in at the end.
- Caps secured with adhesive as the last step.
How to compare two retaining wall quotes
Two quotes for the same wall can describe very different jobs. Ask each contractor the same questions and compare the answers line by line:
- How deep is the base, and what material is it made of?
- Are the drain pipe and gravel backfill included, and where will the water exit?
- Does the wall height call for reinforcement or an engineer’s design, and is that in the price?
- Who checks whether a permit is needed and who applies for it?
- Are soil haul-off, caps, and repair of any lawn, irrigation, or pavers disturbed by the work included?
A lower quote that leaves out drainage or reinforcement is not the cheaper wall. It is a different wall, and usually the one that has to be rebuilt.
Common retaining wall mistakes
- No drainage. Water trapped behind a wall adds pressure with every heavy rain. This is the most common reason walls lean.
- Building on loose soil. A wall set on topsoil or uncompacted fill settles unevenly and opens gaps between blocks.
- Going too tall without a design. Stacking extra courses on a wall that was planned as a low garden wall asks more of it than it can carry.

Loose caps or a short section that has shifted can often be taken apart and reset on a corrected base.
